Here's how to Work From Bed and Maintain a Good Posture

Working from bed is not ideal, but sometimes it really cannot be avoided. And when it has to be done it is really important to follow a few simple rules to ensure that no injury to the neck or back is sustained. It is very easy to slouch and prop oneself up on an elbow with the telephone held between the head and the shoulder.

Twisting awkwardly on a soft mattress can do untold damage to a fragile back, so take all care to prevent this.

PREVENTION BETTER THAN CURE

So what can be done then to make working from bed a safer option? Posture is the important word. Slouching over an office desk or working at the wrong height to the task in hand is something everyone does. But when one is lying in bed it can cause even more problems due to the relaxed nature of the environment.
Ok, reading reports propped up on comfy pillows is not going to do much harm. It is when computers become part of the equation that problems start.

Make sure the back, especially the lumbar spine, is supported well with a pillow. Pillows placed under the legs can help with muscle strain too and the whole package is one of support and comfort. Support the arms and elbows and ensure the wrists are straight. This is especially important if working on a keyboard and will lessen any ache across the shoulders and neck.

WORKING ON A COMPUTER OR LAPTOP

Talking of keyboards, try to use a detachable one to help maintain posture. Working on a laptop is not ideal here, but taking time out to support the body is going to lessen any structural damage. Rest the keyboard on a padded lap tray or pillow. This will also stop it wobbling about and will provide a stable base on which to work.

Of course, with keyboards come monitors and screens and wrong positioning of these can cause havoc with the neck. It is important that the screen is positioned correctly. At eye level or just below is ideal and try and place it on an extendible arm or a table if possible.

The one simple and obvious thing that everyone forgets is movement. It is important to get up and move around at least once an hour. Get out of bed and have a good stretch. Roll the shoulders, circle the neck a couple of times. Bend the waist and rotate the hips. Get the blood flowing into the extremities, the legs being especially important. Think of long haul flights and blood clots. Clots can occur whenever there is insufficient movement over a period of time, so remember this and circle those ankles.

In long-term working from bed this is especially a problem. If a prolonged injury or illness means bed rest, try and carry out some exercises whilst sitting in bed. Promoting circulation is achievable and very important. The important things to remember are posture and movement. Just think of these and working from bed, occasionally, should not be too much of a problem.
